Calabasas Remodeling and Construction Without the Handoffs

Custom outdoor firepit, pool, and stonework by Nicodemus Construction

Calabasas homeowners have no shortage of contractors to choose from. What they have a shortage of is contractors who show up, run the job personally, and finish at the number they quoted. The homes here are significant — gated estates in The Oaks, Mediterranean customs above the country club, hillside properties backing up to the Santa Monica Mountains — and they deserve better than a sales rep who disappears after the contract is signed. Nicodemus Construction has been building and remodeling homes across Southern California for more than three decades, and every project gets the same structure: David Nicodemus runs it, start to finish.

We come to Calabasas from the Ventura County side, and that matters more than it sounds. Our crews work the Conejo Valley and Calabasas corridor every week — Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills adjacent neighborhoods — so a Calabasas project is not a long-haul job we squeeze in. It is our home range.

What Can We Build or Remodel for You?

Marble kitchen remodel with custom island, North Ranch
Do you remodel kitchens in Calabasas?

Kitchens are our most requested project here. Calabasas homes built in the 1990s and 2000s often have kitchens that were high-end for their era but read dated now: heavy granite, closed sight lines, cherry cabinetry that darkens the room. We rebuild them with open layouts, custom cabinetry, natural stone and quartz surfaces, oversized islands, layered lighting, and integrated appliances. See the full kitchen remodeling process we run from layout through final walkthrough.

Bathroom remodel with backlit mirror and floating vanity, North Ranch
What about bathrooms?

Yes — primary suites are the most common request. Walk-in showers with frameless glass, freestanding tubs, double floating vanities, heated floors, and book-matched stone are standard scope for us. We also update guest and hall baths, often as part of a whole-home refresh. Our approach to bathroom remodeling covers every project size.

Room addition and ADU construction in progress
Do you build room additions and ADUs in Calabasas?

Both. Calabasas lot sizes — especially in the older neighborhoods and on hillside parcels — support meaningful additions and detached accessory dwelling units. California's ADU laws apply here just as they do everywhere in the state, and we design and build accessory dwelling units and room additions that clear the City of Calabasas review process and match the architecture of the main home.

Modern farmhouse custom home, North Ranch
Can you build a custom home?

Yes. We provide custom home construction from site evaluation through certificate of occupancy, including hillside lots that need engineered foundations, caissons, and grading plans. Calabasas hillsides are demanding sites; we have built on comparable terrain across the Conejo Valley and Malibu canyons for decades.

Custom infinity-edge pool, deck, and fire feature
What about outdoor living?

The Calabasas climate is made for it. We build custom pools, patios, decks, outdoor kitchens, and fire features designed for entertaining-scale backyards — the kind of complete outdoor environments that Calabasas properties have the room to support.

Building in Calabasas: What You Need to Know

Calabasas is an LA County city with its own rules, and they shape every project.

01
City of Calabasas permitting and design review.

The city runs its own Building & Safety division, and projects that change the exterior, add square footage, or touch hillside terrain can trigger additional planning review. We prepare complete submittals, respond to plan-check corrections, and coordinate inspections so the process moves.

02
HOA architectural review in the gated communities.

The Oaks, Calabasas Park, Mont Calabasas, and the other planned communities each run architectural review on exterior changes — materials, colors, rooflines, landscape structures. We manage the HOA submission in parallel with the city permit so both approvals land before we break ground.

03
Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone construction.

Much of Calabasas, particularly the hillside and canyon-adjacent neighborhoods, sits in a designated Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. New construction and substantial remodels must meet Chapter 7A wildland-urban interface standards: ignition-resistant exteriors, ember-resistant venting, tempered dual-pane glazing, defensible-space landscaping. We build to these standards as a matter of course — they are the same rules we work under in Malibu and the Conejo hillsides.

04
Hillside lots and geology.

Sloped parcels here need engineered grading, retaining structures, and drainage design, and often a geotechnical report before plans are approved. We coordinate the soils engineers and structural engineers as part of our scope, not as a surprise line item.

Calabasas Neighborhoods We Serve

The Oaks.

Gated estates with high finish expectations and active architectural review. Kitchen and primary-suite remodels, outdoor living builds, and whole-home refreshes are the common scope here.

Calabasas Park and the country club area.

Established Mediterranean and traditional homes from the 1980s and 1990s, many now due for full interior updates and system replacements.

Old Town and the older flatland neighborhoods.

Smaller lots, older housing stock, and the most straightforward permitting in the city. Additions, ADUs, and full remodels do well here.

Hillside and canyon properties.

View lots along the Santa Monica Mountains edge, where fire-zone rules and slope engineering drive the design. This is terrain we know from decades of hillside work in the region.

Serving Calabasas from a Ventura County Base

Calabasas sits at the eastern edge of our service area, and we work it alongside the neighboring communities we have served for years: Agoura Hills directly next door, Westlake Village across the county line, Thousand Oaks up the 101, and Malibu over the hill on Las Virgenes. Wherever the project is, David manages it personally.
